Women's World: Showcasing the best of Yorkshire fashion

Britain has always been at the forefront of the fashion world.

And it's down to cutting edge designs from names such as Alexander McQueen, Paul Smith, Vivienne Westwood, Julian Macdonald, Stella McCartney, Paul, Smith, John Galliano and Calderdale's very own Christopher Bailey that keeps us firmly on the map.

Christopher, aged 38, is something of a household name, thanks to his sterling work as creative director of Burberry, the British company he joined back in 2001. He's just been awarded an MBE for his services to the fashion industry in the same month that he's lent his support to the very first Yorkshire Fashion Week.

Yorkshire Fashion Week 2009 is a celebration of the county's strong involvement in the industry. Wonderful cloth, stylish designers and a vibrant, student fashion scene are part of the fabric of our region. Organisers say the event will pay homage to established Yorkshire designers and showcase the skills behind iconic fashion brands as well as providing a platform for the leading designers of tomorrow.

It takes place from Monday and culminates on Friday, June 26 with a spectacular gala evening and catwalk show which is open to the public. The show will feature established designers from our region, as well as the work of up and coming new names.

During the week, numerous fashion shows will take place at universities and colleges around the region and fashion fans will be able to visit a `Behind the Seams' exhibition which will look at the intricate skills and craftsmanship that goes into fashion, and honours the skills of those who work behind the "seams" in our top companies.

A collection from one of the country's leading designers, Betty Jackson, will be one of the highlights of the event, which is being organised by The Textile Centre of Excellence, Huddersfield, with backing from Yorkshire Forward, Welcome To Yorkshire, Skillfast-UK and Kirklees Council.

Calderdale is taking a leading role in the week thanks to Christopher Bailey who hopes to attend the gala evening at Huddersfield's Galpharm Sta-dium: "As a Yorkshireman I feel incredibly proud to be associated with such a fantastic initiative and expression of northern, British talent, and one that reflects the heritage the county has always had in textiles, design, quality and creativity. Bu-rberry has a long-standing association with Yorkshire, producing our iconic rainwear in Castle-ford and regularly working with local initiatives and universities."

Christopher, who has a home in Calderdale, dresses well known celebrities like Kate Moss and Madonna, as does another designer with Halifax links, Kevan Aspinall.

Kevan specalises in evening wear and his clothes have been worn by everyone from Victoria Beckham to Geri Halliwell and Nell McAndrew. He designs, and has his garments made up at his factory in Square Road, Halifax and has a shop, Kevan Jon, in Huddersfield.

Kevan, who went to college with Christopher, has been established for 14 years and set up his Halifax factory seven years ago. He does eight ranges a year and will be showing 10 outfits from his autumn/winter 2009 range in the catwalk show.

The catwalk shows are being staged by the Louise Morton Model Agency which began in Calderdale and will include local models. The "Behind the Seams" exhibition is at the Galpharm Statium and features brands such as Jasper Conran and Mulberry. One of the aims is to help young people have a better understanding of the jobs and skills required by fashion houses.
