Lightly Brass: Show just got better and better

Square Chapel, Halifax

WHAT a splendid evening this turned out to be.

As a departure from their usual spring presentations, Halifax Light Opera Society decided on an evening with a difference.

Bringing in Phoenix Brass as guests provided the perfect balance for a highly-entertaining programme which delighted the audience and was compered by Elaine Greenwood.

The concert got better as the night went on and the second half was full of surprises with the brass musicians dressing up as an oompah band with everyone encouraged to join in.

Leader Graham Hetherington was a humorous frontman and society musical director Ann Hindle brought out the best from the singers with their delightful harmonies, accompanied by the hard-working David Nether-wood.

It was whistle along time on Always Look On The Bright Side from Spamalot.

A full of movement Chitty Chitty Bang Bang medley enabled soloist Adam Colbeck-Dunn, 18, to show the talent that earned him a place at a top London theatre school.

Band and chorus spotlighted some of their leading performers and a plug for the society's staging of Oliver! at the Victoria in November came with Who Will Buy?

Some of the best of Abba (choir) and Glenn Miller (brass) were some of the other highlights.
