Lucky Sods: Winning the lottery's not all fun and games

Lucky Sods, Hull Truck Theatre, Victoria Theatre, Halifax

Lucky Sods is a deeply moral play about the corrosive effect of money on values and relationships.

But playwright John Godber has an unerring ear for realistic characterisation and dialogue. He seasons the seriousness of his theme with laugh-out-loud comedy, which can turn sour and even tragic within just a few lines. The Parliamentary expenses scandals, to say nothing of the recession, lend additional layers of significance to the play which was written in 1995 when the National Lottery first started.

In Nick Lane's well-paced production the lucky sods who win the lottery (and go on winning it) are lottery addict Jean who yearns to live the high life and her stick-in-the-mud husband Morris.

They learn the hard way that the sudden and arbitary acquisition of millions erodes family ties and friendships and is no guarantee of generosity, health or happiness: that maybe they are not so lucky after all.

Jacqueline Naylor and Gordon Kane were totally convincing as 22 years married and significantly childless Jean and Morris. Fiona Wass and James Weaver each played three roles, displaying effortless versatility and feel for characters.

Pip Leckenby's pound-sign sets seemed rather strange and over-emphatic but they certainly rammed the message home. Lucky Sods continues until Wednesday.
