Maddy's at her best in Steeleye Span

The Victoria Theatre, Halifax

FOLK legend Maddy Prior involves herself in various projects, including touring with the Carnival Band in the festive season. But she is at her best fronting Steeleye Span.

Words of the story songs in the first half were difficult to pick up. But, following a number of complaints, the sound engineer got the balance right.

This made the rest of the concert much more enjoyable, the lead singer returning in a long dress after opening the show in a short skirt, casual top and boots.

She was surrounded by musicians who had their chance to shine and took it in turn to introduce the selections.

Changes in band members over the years have made little difference to the overall quality of the folk rock sound.

Their soaring harmonies remain strong, bass player Rick Kemp ensures the band continue with a rock-based persuasion and drummer Liam Gonockey pounds out the beat.

Ken Nicol is a splendid lead guitarist and Peter Knight shows his versatility on fiddle, mandolin and keyboard. He also sang a rather depressing closer, The Song Will Remain, in contrast to the first of the encores, 1975 hit All Around My Hat with Prior encouraging everyone to join in.

The early ones remain the best, including Gone To America and The Blacksmith, the first song recorded by the band.
