I was intrigued to read your article about Ripponden Carriers (“End of the road for blue and cream”, Nostalgia, August 31).
I worked there from 1985 to 1998 and had 13 wonderful years, starting as a driver’s mate. The company would put mates who stayed on through their HGV licence training, which they did for me.
Ripponden Motors always opened up the route to the M62 in winter.
I’d be interested to know the whereabouts of some the old vehicles because I’m sure they were all in good condition. Our snowplough was a coach-built Foden which was built and managed by the mechanics.
