Starburst Showcase 2009

Whiteley's Academy of Performing Arts Victoria Theatre, Halifax

The talented students of Whiteley's Academy of Performing Arts did their teachers and choreographers proud with their latest beautifully costumed, lavish show.

They are in their element on stage and impressed with their energy, commitment and professionalism.

A varied selection of musicals provided the inspiration for their programme.

This enabled the drama element to be incorporated into the song and dance very naturally and put the emphasis very much on the singing.

Super-talented Zak Jennings, who could have done with more dancing opportunities, such a pleasure is he to watch, got things off to a lively start with Dancing Fool, accompanied by Classes 4 and 5 who also excelled in the fluorescently colourful Space, jaunty On The Town, an ingeniously choreographed Sweeney Todd and Rent, which featured the fine choir and strong solo singing from Emma Yearsley.

Classes 2 and 3 shone in Oliver! and Guys and Dolls, with Jay Jay Riley, Lara Mucha and Emily Knight leading the little ones in Joseph.

Highlights were the brilliant Blues Brothers and Musical Theatre's Legally Blonde featuring Sophie Griffin, her strong voice belying her tiny frame.

Only the rather overloud and uneven sound amplification, rendering the words unfortunately inaudible at times, marred an otherwise excellent show.
