Tea - and a toast to success
Halifax Gilbert & Sullivan Society members are celebrating with more than a pot of tea after winning two awards for their latest production
Halifax Gilbert & Sullivan Society members are celebrating with more than a pot of tea after winning two awards for their latest production.
The Society's version of The Sorcerer, which was staged at Halifax Playhouse in November, won two prestigious categories in this year's National Operatic and Dramatic Association (NODA) 2008 Local Awards.
The show won best overall production and soprano Amy Greenwood won best female lead for her part as the heroine Aline.
The Sorcerer involves a magician adding a love potion to a teapot, with villagers falling under its spell with hilarious consequences.
Producer Margaret Schofield says: "I would like to thank all the talented people in the society for their enthusiasm and for the enjoyment both they and their audiences have shared.
"Calderdale has a rich vein of singing and drama societies who all produce wonderful entertainment, so to win these awards is considered a great honour."
The society is now gearing up for its 2009 production, The Gondoliers, set in Venice. Members hope the show will light up the darker days - it will be presented from Tuesday, November 3, to Saturday, November 8, at Halifax Playhouse.
