Video: Lyn has an early 21st for Broadway bash - see the cast in rehearsals
BIRTHDAY celebrations were brought forward so Lyn Sutherland could stage her colourful song and dance show in Halifax on Sunday.
Lyn, who was 21 yesterday, would have enjoyed a birthday bash this weekend but commitments to the production – called Musicallyfragilistic – meant she celebrated her milestone birthday last weekend instead.
A cast of 18, mostly students on a Calderdale College BTec dance course, will be performing some of the best-loved songs from Broadway and the West End at the Square Chapel (7.30pm). The show features songs from favourites such as The Sound of Music and Cabaret and also new musicals Wicked and Hairspray. Lyn is also taking part in Sunday's production.
The production's title pays homage to the Mary Poppins song Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
Lyn, from Sunderland, is currently living in Halifax while she completes the third year of her degree.
She said: "I'm studying for a BA in Performance Arts at Leeds University but the course is based at Calderdale College.
"I have previously gained a Foundation Degree in Musical Theatre from Northumbria University and have moved here to complete my final year to top up to a full degree as they did not offer the final year in Newcastle. I
"I moved here in September and will be living here until June."
When Lyn completes her degree in the summer she hopes to set up her own theatre company, aiming to secure funding from organisations such as local authorities to encourage people from underprivileged backgrounds –
who might not be able to afford dance lessons – to get involved.
