NURSERY nurses and childcare assistants can now gain qualifications in a real working environment
The Ark Childcare Academy will provide early years training and qualifications up to degree level for the upper valley area of Calderdale, reaching into Hebden Bridge and Todmorden.
The scheme is a partnership between Ark Day Nursery at Dean Hey Far
m, Cragg Road, Mytholmroyd, and Calderdale College.
It offers purpose-built facilities within the building, combined with on-site delivery and assessments by the college's childcare lecturers.
The academy is already providing training to Ark's own staff and is now opening its doors to other childcare providers and individuals.
College vice-principal Maria Gilling said: "This is a key training amenity for the area, which can take childcare learners all the way through from foundation level right up to a Foundation Degree.
"We're always looking at innovative ways of making learning more accessible to people throughout Calderdale and this mirrors a similar model which we have established with Mark Riley Hair Salons in Brighouse, where we have taken learning into the workplace by providing teaching and dedicated classroom areas."
The Ark Day Nursery, founded six years ago by Heidi Bingham and Jo Brock, now offers 280 childcare places with a high staff-to-child ratio.
l The nursery was highly commended by judges after beating 1,400 other entries to become one of three finalists in the Small Employer of the Year category of the Learning and Skills Council National Apprenticeship Awards.
Heidi and Jo were accompanied to the presentation at London's Royal Horticultural Hall, by Calder Valley MP Chris McCafferty.
She said: "The Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, John Denham, was very impressed with Heidi and Jo's business acumen and the way they have set up and developed the Ark Day Nursery in Mytholmroyd.
"Calder Valley is well known for the number of innovative small businesses located here and I am delighted Ark Day Nursery has been recognised on the national stage."
