A CALDERDALE agricultural student is celebrating taking the top prize at Bishop Burton College's annual stockmanship competition.
Simon Wheelwright (17), whose family have a dairy herd at Stainland, is in the first year of a First Diploma in Agriculture at the College in Beverley, East Yorkshire.

He first won the Dairy section and then was named Overall Stock-man of the Year.

"It's been very chaotic preparing for the competition," said Simon.

"Although I come from a dairy background, I've never done this before and I'm really surprised that I won the section and stockman of the year."

The event, which is designed to help agriculture and equine students gain experience of preparing for agricultural shows and animal husbandry, is thought to be the only one of its kind in the country.
