THE popularity of a natural-based skin product for horses has prompted its inventor to develop a similar treatment for dogs.
Last year Mags Roxburgh, managing director of Stable Environment Ltd, launched the Ultimate Two-in-One Fly Repellent and Skin Tonic.
Passionate about animals and protecting the environment, she set about researching and creating a non-chemical based cure for horses infected with "sweet itch" - a skin disorder that needs antiseptic, anti-fungal and anti-bacterial treatment.
She is already selling abroad and has been asked by an American company to design some products for it. Even the BBC's Dragon's Den team saw the story in the Courier and asked her to go on the show.
But she turned them down wanting funds to go to animal charities.
The product was a hit with horse owners, who then asked for a product for their dogs. So she developed the 4in1 K9 Care product, with 10 per cent of proceeds to go to charity Animals in Distress.
"People kept emailing and phoning in, asking me to produce a dog range with Neem in," said Mrs Roxburgh.
The natural repellents in 4in1 K9 Care are Neem and Lemongrass pure essential oils.
Once again Mrs Roxburgh used her 15 years of experience as a trichologist, and also as an aromatherapist and hairdresser.
Neem, used for centuries because of its natural anti-bacterial and anti-fungal qualities, is a natural repellent for biting insects and treatment for skin allergies. Lemongrass also has a natural antibacterial action and the smell is liked by dogs.
One of the other main benefits is the product's anti-paw slip element.
"So many dogs are suffering with bad backs these days," said Mrs Roxburgh.
"It's due mainly to hard, un-carpeted, flooring, as their paws have nothing to grip.
"Constant slipping causes all sorts of problems, including in some cases chronic back and hip pain.
"I am so pleased so many dogs will benefit," she said
The product has proved a success during trials at indoor dog agility training classes at the K9 Academy at Sowood Community Centre, Sowood.
