But the left back understands why Town are being written off after three successive defeats.

Two weeks ago Halifax, who travel to Rushden & Diamonds in the semi-final of the Setanta Shield tomorrow night, were looking comfortable on 43 points - 12 above the dreaded dotted line after a run of three wins in four games.

But, ahead of Saturday's trip to Exeter, it is only their superior goal difference that is keeping their heads above water following reverses against Forest Green, Oxford and Droylsden and the deduction of 10 points after the club was placed into administration.

"I have been in relegation battles before I came to Halifax and in every one of them you get written off at some stage," said Doughty.

"When you are doing well, everyone is behind you, chanting your names.

"When you are losing you are the worst player in the world.

"That is just part of football.

"The manager is a determined man and a very good manager.

"He is strong enough and so are the players and I am certain we can get through it."

Town have won just once at Exeter in 19 visits - and that was 20 years ago.

But Doughty remains confident that they can get something from the clash at St James's Park at the weekend.

"Exeter are a decent passing team," he said. "They don't just lump it forward and that might help us.

"We will go to Exeter and stay as a unit. We can get out of it.

"That's what happened last season and we got out of it then."

While no one at the club would admit it, the 10-point deduction has clearly affected the players - they have lost three games and failed to score a single goal since the administration was announced.

"We have tried not to let the deduction of points affect us," said Doughty.

"But obviously looking at us after three successive defeats people might think it has.

"I just think we have not played well."
