Athletics: Fines finds form in Lakes

HELEN Fines of Calder Valley produced a great run in the picturesque setting of the Kentmere fells near Kendal, Cumbria to storm to victory in the ladies' section of the English fell running championship race.
Fines totally dominated over the 11.9 mile horseshoe shaped course which involves 3,300ft of climbing, finishing more than two minutes ahead of her nearest rival in one hour, 44 minutes and 30 seconds.

Sally Newman was also in great form, taking t
hird place in 1.50.46, a time which also earned her first place in the veteran ladies' section.

The club were well represented with 16 runners in a large field of almost 400, and the men were also in great form with Shaun Godsman producing a great run to take a creditable fifth spot in one hour, 31 minutes and 55 seconds.

John Henighan of the Pudsey & Bramley club was race winner in a time of 1.26.17.

JOHN Greenwood was first back of the 14 Halifax Harriers to compete in the latest round of the Yorkshire Veterans' Grand Prix held at Stainland.

The series is open to any runner from the county aged 35 or above with prizes for each 10 year age category, and the Stainland event featured a six mile off-road course which began at the top of North Dean woods and headed towards Norland Moor.

A downhill stretch to Copley followed before a pleasant flat stretch along the river bank and a long climb to the finish at Clay House.

All the 14 Harriers finished though club coach Mike Spence took a wrong turn and raced a different route.
