DIFFICULT conditions did not prevent new course records for both men and women being set in this week's Cragg Vale fell race near Mytholmroyd.
Almost 100 runners took on the four mile route which involves 720ft of ascending, and they had to cope with hot and humid conditions at the start followed by a later downpour which made the final descent treacherous.
The race winners were untroubled
however with John Brown of Salford and Mary Wilkinson of Bingley, who are both England internationals, clocking new records of 26 minutes, 27 seconds and 31.11 respectively.
Jason Stevens was best placed of the 20 Calder Valley runners, finishing fifth in 29.39, and though the men's team had to settle for second spot behind Rossendale, the ladies' team were victorious with Claire Hanson in 61st place, Barbara Lonsdale 62nd and Catherine Holden 69th.

STAINLAND Lions pair Linda Murgatroyd and Helen Lambert took part in the Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon in Cumbria over the weekend, the tough two day event being made more difficult by continual rain.
Entering the 'Wansfell' class of 76 teams, the pair were 17th after the first day which involved 5,000ft of climb over a 12 mile route whilst carrying camping gear and navigating eight checkpoints.
On day two, the pair completed a run from Downthwaitehead to Fornside Farm, St John's in the Vale, which involved 3,000 ft of climbing and seven checkpoints to finish 15th overall and a highly creditable third place in the ladies teams.

FOUR Lions took part in the popular City of Manchester 10K road race on Sunday, with Iain Threlkeld first home for the club in 49 minutes, 52 seconds followed by Rebecca Sanderson 50.21, Cathy Mellor 51.15 and David Wetherall 51.54.
At the Helen Windsor 10k road race from Greetland, Stainland had 49 members running and first three men home for the Lions were Johnny Moore in 39 minutes, three seconds, John Bassinder in 41.32 and Jez Cooke 42.00.
Lorraine Naylor again led their ladies home in 40.57, giving her third place overall, followed by Tanya Seager 42.43 and Emma Fawcett 46.19.
The Lions host the next round in the Yorkshire Veterans' Athletic Association league next Wednesday, July 16, at 7.30pm. The race will start from Heath Rugby Union Club, West Vale, and take a seven mile off road route.
Runners should be affiliated to a UK club and for the purpose of these races the age limit is relaxed slightly to include any male or female over the age of 35.

TODMORDEN Harriers held their Stoodley Pike Fell race, the oldest established fell run in the area, on Tuesday.
The race, which covers 3.5 miles with 700ft of ascent, was won by Danny Hope of Pudsey and Bramley in 18 minutes, 55 seconds, while Chris Smale of the home club was third in 19.28.
Alex Whittem of Calder Valley was a superb sixth in 20.15 and club colleague Jason Stevens eighth in 20.44, while first home for Stainland was Toby Underwood in 22.35.
Other Stainland finishers: Paul Rawnsley 23.22, Jez Cooke 25.19, John Bassinder 26.00. Lee Naylor 26.26, Graham Dyson 26.40, Gavin Dodd 27.20, Tom Pellett 28.38.
