SCHOOLCHILDREN in Calderdale are padding up for the first-ever Chance to Shine national cricket day next Tuesday.
Pupils at Abbey Park Primary School, St.Malachy's RC Primary School and Ling Bob J, I and N Schools will join hundreds of schools across England and Wales in enjoying a day of cricket in their schools.
It will mark the third anniversary of Chance to
Shine – the Cricket Foundation's campaign to educate state schoolchildren through cricket.
The Cricket Foundation is offering a range of activities from Kwik Cricket to writing cricket poems (English), working out the co-ordinates of a cricket field (maths) and locating first class cricket club counties (geography).
The MCC is also launching a nationwide spirit of cricket schools competition on the same day.
Pupils will be invited to design a badge and motto that represent the spirit of cricket with the best entry winning tickets to the second day of the England v South Africa match at Lord's on July 11 and seeing their design displayed on the scoreboards and made into a badge for distribution on the day.
Dorian Brooksby, Illingworth CC's Chance to Shine club manager, said: "Out of school activities for sporting and non sporting activities is an important aspect of school life at Ling Bob.
"There has been a noticeable increase throughout Calderdale schools in the demand for involvement in competitive cricket and cricket coaching in and beyond school hours since the scheme started."
Last year nearly 100,000 youngsters took part in Chance to Shine programmes.
