HIPPERHOLME and Lightcliffe Sports College under 13s have a big day out at Headingley tomorrow at Yorkshire finals day.
Having made it to the quarter final stages in the previous four years, the current crop of players under captain Alex Mellor have gone one better following victory over Outwood Grange, Wakefield.
They will now face either Ilkley Grammar School, Harrogate Grammar School or Kelvin Hall School, Hull in the semi-finals in their bid to become county champions for the first time in the school's history.
Following a 43 run first round victory over Brooksbank Sports College, the Stoney Lane boys had a very tough tie away to previous winners Kirkburton School, Huddersfield.
They knew that they had to be on top of their game with Mellor away on Yorkshire duty and it was a real team effort that saw them through, with Callum Lewis and Luke Parkin getting them over the winning line with two balls to spare.
Defending champions Castle Hall then visited Lightcliffe CC and an extremely tight bowing display, which included four wickets from spinner Parkin, left Hipperholme needing to score 80 to go through. Danny Cole's 44, which included four sixes, put them firmly on course and a huge six from Mellor clinched victory.
Against Outwood Grange, Hipperholme restricted the visitors to 21 runs off the first 10 overs with some superb fielding, Ben Lear taking an excellent diving catch at short extra cover.
Outwood eventually posted a creditable 88 and Mellor's departure for 18 left Hipperholme 58 for two in reply in the 14th over. The run rate slowed but Kier Litjens played some controlled, attacking cricket before Cole clattered a boundary over long on to clinch victory and finish unbeaten on 38.
Luke Parkin and Jamie Wilkinson miss tomorrow's action but a solid squad will head to Leeds hopeful of bringing the cup back to Halifax.
Team: A.Mellor (capt), D.Cole, T.Swaine, K.Litjens, C.Lewis, S.Talbot, B.Lear, M.Atkins, M.Hartley, K.Rodger, E.Richardson, J.Byrnes.
