Three interception tries played a large part in sending Wests clear when Crocs had still been in contention.

Crossleyans had the advantage of a strong wind in the first half but failed to exert much pressure. Lineouts were regularly lost and their kicking was generally aimless.

West Hartlepool soon counter attacked and it took a fine Chris Seymour tackle to prevent a try wide out. Two home penalties followed but when Ian Holmes replied for the visitors after 30 minutes it was 6-3 and there was everything to play for.

A missed tackle enabled Hartlepool to extend their lead and Crocs were down to 14 men when Hammond was yellow carded.

Crossleyans were anxious to pull back points before half time but some ambitious passing in their own half broke down and Wests added a second try by the posts.

A score of 18-3 hardly reflected the balance of play in the first 40 minutes but on the restart Wests gathered the kick off cleanly and added a third converted try.

Crocs staged a spirited fightback with substitute Stuart Hill immediately catching the eye. Richard Thomas was leading a pack that meant business and Shane Davis forced himself over in the corner.

When Rob Oliver was shown the yellow card the Crocs continued to attack but with a second try possible the ball was lost and Hartlepool celebrated a fine 85 yard try and a lead of 30-8.

Manny Riaz and Seymour left with injuries, and though Crossleyans were still prepared to attack, mistakes were perhaps inevitable, and four tries, three of which were converted, gave the home side a runaway victory.

But Crocs showed more spirit and supporters and players took the view that further vital league points can be won.

CROCS seconds kept within one score of a strong Wharfedale side for much of the game at Broomfield before losing 45-12 in a non league game.
