TOWN finally got their home campaign up and running with Paul Gedman bagging the side's first Shay goal as they beat Warrington.
But it should have been so much more comfortable - and emphatic - than the final scoreline suggests as they spurned a host of decent chances, especially in the first half.

With Gedman to the fore - he could have bagged a hat-trick before the break - the Shaymen were always too strong and too clever for their visitors on the night.

But Warrington were always in the game while one goal separated the sides and the disappointment was that Town did not go on and score more goals.

The plus points were the performances of Gedman and Cavell Coo on their home debuts and a first competitive start for skipper Tony Barras who marshalled his teammates to a second successive clean sheet.

And back to back wins can only have been good for the confidence of the side ahead of another home game with Salford at the weekend.

After a quiet opening, Town took the lead with a real piece of opportunism from loan striker Gedman.

He pounced on a loose back pass and advanced to the edge of the area before chipping the ball over the keeper and into the net.

He could have added a second eight minutes later after Ashley Stott and Jonathan Smith had combined to win a corner.

Justin Walker's delivery was perfect, but Gedman could not direct his header which flew just over the bar.

Another Walker corner midway through the first half caused problems for Warrington keeper Ritchie Mottram who failed to gather but Lincoln Adams's header was cleared off the line by a defender.

Warrington's best effort of the half was a Phil Hadland shot from 25 yards which flew wide of the target.

And it was the Shaymen who always looked likely to add to their tally.

Kris King rose above two defenders to head a Coo cross just wide and Coo did well down the right - regaining his feet after slipping - before pulling the ball back to the penalty spot, but there was no one there to capitalise.

Smith had a long range shot that Mottram gathered at the second attempt before Gedman, Walker and Stott combined in the move of the half to release Coo who could only find the side netting with his shot.

Gedman headed narrowly wide from another Walker corner inside the opening minute of the second half and Smith's free kick from the edge of the area bent round the wall but straight into the keeper's arms.

That suggested that the Shay fans were to be treated to more of the same.
But the reality was that Halifax failed to really hit the heights again in the second half, although for all their possession, Warrington rarely looked particularly threatening.
Kennedy was never called on to make anything more than a routine save, which he did without fuss from a Danny Toone free kick in the 56th minute and against from David Thompson soon after.
And on the one occasion the Town keeper failed to gather the ball, under intense pressure from another Toone free kick, King was on hand to clear.
Town were not entirely chanceless, although they were unable to find the goal that would finally kill off the game.
They had a great chance in the 63rd minute when Peter Moore's volleyed pass found Stott.
The striker swapped passes with Smith but could not get sufficient power or the right direction on his shot to beat the keeper.
Phil Hadland had a couple of opportunities for the visitors, his first being blocked by King and his second - deep into stoppage time at the end of the game deflected wide for a corner that came to nothing.
In between, Adam Morning did well on the left to cross a couple of times but his first was just behind Gedman and his second went over Steve Payne's head.
The game ended in some controversy as Warrington skipper Matty Farrell was shown a red card in the tunnel for verbally abusing the referee.

STAR SHAYMAN
Cavell Coo enjoyed the freedom of the Shay last night, especially in the first half when he ran riot down the Town right.
Given more licence to get forward with the switch to three centre backs, the loan man took full advantage and was at the heart of many of the Shaymen's best moves.
When called on to defend, he did so coolly and without fuss.
Paul Gedman was again a pivotal figure in Town's attacks, holding the ball up well, flicking on for the runners and causing the Warrington defence problems.
But he is not all about brawn as his superb 11th minute chipped goal that gave Town the win showed.
Justin Walker showed his worth from set pieces with several first half corners that put the visitors' defence under real pressure.
Coo takes three points, Gedman two and Walker one.
