NIGEL Jemson was Town's hero as they moved three points clear at the top of Unibond One North.
The former Nottingham Forest hitman returned to the attack and bagged two second half goals as the Shaymen saw off 10-man Wakefield.
But Jim Vince's side made hard work of it after Wakefield had Andy Woods sent off on 28 minutes for handling the ball outside the area.
The former Halifax keeper could have no complaints about his red card as he denied Ajay Leitch-Smith the chance to score.
And it certainly helped the Shaymen, who had to wait until the second minute after the break to finally open their account.
Town were always the dominant side, with Tom Baker again outstanding, but there was a lot of huff and puff as they struggled to kill off the opposition.
They certainly struggled in the opening 15 minutes and not until Baker had a well-struck 30-yarder saved at the second attempt by Woods did the game spring into life.
Two minutes later Woods got down to his right to parry a left foot shot from Cavell Coo and Steve Nicholson slid in to deny Junior Brown the chance to capitalise on the rebound.
Damien Allen was next to go close, latching on to a Jemson nod down before striking a curling shot narrowly wide.
Woods was called into action again in the 26th minute, tipping a dipping Brown volley over the bar.
But it was the Wakefield keeper's last meaningful action as, two minutes later, he raced out of the box on the right to block the ball as Leith-Smith attempted to lift it over his head.
The referee had no option other than to brandish the red card and striker James Walshaw took over in goal.
He was almost beaten before he had touched the ball as Baker crashed the free kick given for Woods' handball against the post.
But he had little else to do before the break thanks to a combination of poor Town play and good protection from his defence.
It was a different matter in the early stages of the second half and, after Brown had sent a shot wide within 60 seconds of the restart, the Shaymen took the lead in the 47th minute.
Brown was beaten in the air to Coo's cross from the right, but Jemson was lurking 10 yards out and swivelled to fire home with his left foot.
Town continued to struggle to make an impression despite the goal until the 58th minute when Baker picked up the ball 30 yards out and hit a magnificent dipping volley that gave stand-in stopper Walshaw no chance.
Surely that was the time to cut loose. No.
Within 60 seconds Wakefield pulled one back when Halifax failed to close down Chris Howarth on the edge of the area and he rifled home.
Jemson fired a free kick into the wall before restoring the Shaymen's two-goal advantage in the 67th minute, heading home from Allen's left wing corner at the near post to beat Caldon Henson, who had taken over in goal from Walshaw.
Baker was denied by Henson nine minutes later when the defender-turned-keeper dived to his left to tip a shot round the post.
Wakefield launched a late assault and Walshaw forced a save from Jon Kennedy before, from the resulting corner, Wes Milnes fired home unmarked from six yards.
That sent the nerves inside the Shay jangling, given that Town had won just once in their previous six league games.
But they had the opportunity to show their overall superiority with a couple of chances in the dying minutes.
Allen must still be wondering how he failed to score Halifax's fourth goal of the day when, after taking a return pass from Ashley Stott, he managed to fire wide from near the penalty spot.
And Stott could have added to his tally for the season in injury time after latching onto a ball over the top, but he was denied by Henson, who saved to his left.

STAR SHAYMAN
There was no doubting the hero at the Shay on Saturday - Nigel Jemson.
He scored twice before receiving a standing ovation when the work had been done with 15 minutes remaining.
Having played so much of his football for Town at the back - and playing it well - he was restored to the attack with devastating effect as he fired the opening goal home with his left foot and headed the third from a Damien Allen corner.
Town's other scorer, Tom Baker, also impressed again as the Shaymen struggled to see off a determined Wakefield side.
And his goal - a 30-yard dipping volley - would have beaten a better keeper than the visitors' stand-in James Walshaw, who stood absolutely no chance.
Allen also impressed in midfield after a couple of quiet games by his early standards at Town.
And if he had scored with four minutes remaining it would have calmed everyone's nerves.
Jemson takes the three points on offer in our season-long competition with Baker getting two and Allen one.

YOU SAY
Three points thank God. Jemmo is and always will be a Town legend . Tom '10 men' Baker was awsome. I'd rather not comment on the team performance. Earn that shirt or go - that's the feeling of all Town's superb supporters. No shirkers in a tough northern town thankyou - 100 percenter .

Can we have Phil Senior back in goal please ahead of Kennedy? - Town fan
