FEW of the Town fans who travelled to Mossley almost two months ago could possibly have thought the Shaymen would be capable of launching a promotion challenge.
Halifax were awful at Seel Park where, despite going ahead inside a minute through Adam Morning, they crashed 3-1 after being outplayed for 89 minutes.
Tonight at the Shay in the return match against the Manchester side, Town can move up to second place in the Unibond One North table with one-third of the campaign gone.
And by the weekend, with leaders Ossett Albion inactive on Saturday, they could even be top.
The first rule of sport is never to get ahead of yourself and there is little doubt that the full focus of the Halifax squad is on beating Mossley before they turn their attentions to the weekend trip to Woodley Sports.
But on current league form - 19 points from the last 21 on offer tells its own story - there is no reason to suppose that the best case scenario will not come to fruition.
The current midfield trio of - in no particular order - Damien Allen, Tom Baker and Scott Phelan have provided a real stability to the team.
They protect the defence when the opposition have the ball and join the attack when Town are going forward.
And it is the attacking threat which will surely see them continue to prosper.
It will be interesting to see how they cope with the loss of Colin Daniel who has now returned to Crewe Alexandra.
The young striker had a major impact on the side during October and will, doubtless, get his chance at Gresty Road.
What Town have to ensure is that the boost he gave them is turned into a lasting legacy.
They ought to cope without him fairly comfortably with 11-goal leading scorer Ashley Stott ready to return to the starting line up.
Mossley will be confident that they can come to the Shay tonight and complete a league double.
But Curzon Ashton had won in West Yorkshire in the League Cup in the middle of last month yet were never really a match for Town on Saturday.
It is a far different Town side that Mossley will face tonight - a winning Town side that is on a roll and looking good for the promotion bid everyone craves.
