Town had an early opportunity when Cavell Coo fed the ball forward for Ashley Stott whose shot was blocked on the line.
And Stott was denied again soon after by a sliding challenge after latching onto a Scott Phelan pass and Damien Allen fired over
from a half cleared corner.
Blue Star keeper Daniel Lowson saved at the second attempt from Junior Brown before Paul Brayson had Newcastle's first real effort, a shot from the right that went across goal and wide.
The deadlock was finally broken in the 28th minute when Paul Gedman headed home from close range after a Stott shot had come back off the bar.
Four minutes later a Tom Baker free kick bounced off the top of the bar, but Newcastle levelled 10 minutes before the break when Keith Graydon's long range effort was tipped onto the bar by Kennedy before bouncing down over the line.
But the referee initially allowed play to continue before consulting his linesman who awarded the goal.
Town regained the lead seven minutes after the break with a peach of a free kick from Baker who curled the ball into the top left hand corner.
Gedman might have bagged a third, but sent a volley from Stott's cross into the keepr's arms.
But, with the fog coming down, Newcastle levelled again when Karl Ross headed home a Graydon cross in the 63rd minute.
Newcastle had a great chance to go ahead in the 71st minute when Lincoln Adams handled in the area, but David McTiernan hammered his spot kick onto the bar and over.
The visitors were not to be denied and seven minutes later Brayson crossed from the left and Ross bagged his second from close range.
But Town claimed a share of the spoils in the second minute of time added on when Ellis headed home from close range.
