FC Halifax Town could be without Steve Payne for two months after being told he requires ankle surgery.
The influential central defender limped from the field at the end of Saturday's FA Cup defeat at Nantwich.
And that leaves manager Jim Vince with a problem as Tony Barras and Lincoln Adams are his only recognised centre backs.
"Steve's ankle keeps locking which is clearly not right," said Vince. "He could be out for a couple of months and it might mean having to do something in the transfer market if the timing is right."
Payne has played in every Town game so far this season and wore the skipper's armband before Barras returned from his knee surgery a couple of weeks ago.
Striker Neil Ross also requires surgery to repair his injured knee and faces a similar spell on the sidelines.
