Football - West Riding County Amateur League: Depleted Ovenden wilt in heat
WITH Premier Division safety now assured, Ovenden West Riding had little to play for in their clash with Campion at Natty Lane on Saturday and a depleted side slipped to a 1-0 defeat against mid-table opponents.
In a low key first half, the visitors squandered a golden chance to take the lead on 25 minutes when Andy Hurcombe was harshly adjudged to have handled in the area, but Paul Noble's spot kick was superbly saved by Chris Moroney.
WR then suffered a blow when Martin Ayscough was taken to hospital with a gashed forehead after an accidental clash with Noble.
It was still goalless at the break but the visitors upped the pace in the second half and finally broke the deadlock on 70 minutes when following a Tariq Hussein free kick, Peter Pilgrim was allowed too much space and he beat Moroney from six yards for what proved to be the only goal.
Ovenden wind up their campaign with a clash against Meltham Athletic at Natty Lane tomorrow evening (6.30), when Ryan Brook, Jason Todd, Ciaran Green and Michael Pearson return to the side, but Ayscough and Steve Fullard are doubtful.
A typical end of season encounter saw Brighouse Town go down 3-0 at Ardsley.
Graham Merchant gave the home side a half time lead and second half goals by Dave Cateroche and Grant Illingworth sealed it.
Town then drew 1-1 at Meltham last night.
Brighouse Town Reserves ran out 5-1 winners in a Division Two clash against a threadbare Hemsworth.
Jason Tiplady, Matthew Roy and Glen Lee all missed good early chances for Town and they paid the price when a well taken Stuart Watts free kick beat keeper Jason Kirby.
However, Town continued to press and it was no surprise when Tiplady volleyed home the leveller.
Lee then put the home side ahead before a Lee Orton drive made it 3-1 to Town at the break.
A second half own goal made it 4-1 before Jordan Pettifor came off the bench to complete a 5-1 win as he netted after Rob Mitchell's pass.
Daz Rudd was in great form for Town who warmed up in style for next Monday's Division Two cup final against Storthes Hall at Lower Hopton (6.45pm).
Ovenden WR Reserves got back to winning ways in the Reserve Division with a 3-1 win at Littletown with goals from Craig Boothroyd, Gareth Jones and Mick Pearson.
But their promotion hopes took a knock when they lost 3-1 at Keighley Shamrocks last night.
