Football: England off to a winning start
Mitchell Cole bagged the only goal as England C opened their Four Nations tournament campaign with a win over Gibraltar at Colwyn Bay last night.
The Stevenage frontman struck seven minutes before the break on the north Wales coast to settle the game.
But there was a scare for England as Gibraltar, making their debut in the competition this season, had a good shout for a penalty turned down by the referee.
Town striker Jon Shaw came on for the final 20 minutes of the game and will be hoping for more action tomorrow when England face Scotland at Colwyn Bay.
They complete their games against Wales at Rhyl on Saturday before jetting off to the Caribbean.
Paul Fairclough's side top the table after the opening round of matches as Wales and Scotland drew their clash 1-1 at Rhyl.
Caersws striker Graham Evans put the home side in front after 25 minutes only for Edinburgh City's Robbie Ross to level on the stroke of half time.
The game was marred by a bad injury to Wales keeper Ashley Morris who suffered a double leg fracture.
Hull manager Phil Brown has turned to former Bolton boss Sam Allardyce for some advice in the build up to Saturday's Coca-Cola Championship play-off final against Bristol City.
The Tigers, who have never been to Wembley, are on the brink of reaching the top flight for the first time in the club's 104-year history.
Former Halifax Town skipper Brown is now hoping some words of wisdom from his close friend Allardyce can inspire his side to a famous victory in what is billed as the most lucrative game in club football, with promotion thought to be worth in the region of £60million.
"Sam is a very close ally of mine," said Brown, who worked as Allardyce's assistant at Bolton and played under him at Blackpool.
"He just knows how I tick and one or two words of wisdom have been offered my way. We've talked all the way through the season. He's helped me along.
"Obviously, I've got the experience of (assistant manager) Brian Horton and (first-team coach) Steve Parkin behind me as well and they know the football club more than what Sam does. Sam is speaking from the outside in now."
ROCHDALE have failed in their bid to have David Perkins' red card overturned before this weekend's League Two play-off final.
The 25-year-old midfielder now faces a lengthy five-match ban but more importantly will miss the final against Stockport on Monday.
Perkins was shown a straight red card for a challenge on Ricky Ravenhill in extra-time against Darlington but Dale held on in the closing stages to win 5-4 on penalties and secure the club a Wembley date for the first time in their history.
Rochdale chairman Chris Dunphy said: "I am personally outraged because anyone who saw it on television could see there was no contact. We felt confident the decision could be overturned and we are now stunned. The referee got it wrong and everyone could see he got it wrong. This underlines the poor standards of referees we have had at Rochdale this season."
