West Riding Trophy
AFTER a couple of poor league performances, Brighouse Old Boys got back to winning ways with a 3-0 first round win at Manchester League outfit Springhead.
Despite playing into the wind, the visitors pressed with holding midfielder Neil Fitzjohn and centre midfield partners Vaughan Wagstaffe and Michael Barlow dominating the early exchanges.
The pressure was rewarded when a flowing move ended with Rob
Kenny's shot being superbly saved by the home keeper only for Martin Newham to slip the rebound home from close range.
A spirited Springhead came out with all guns blazing after the break but Brighouse held firm and doubled their lead after a brilliant ball from Barlow found Kenny who finished in style.
The Old Boys then withstood a period of pressure but the introduction of ex Brighouse Town player Shaun Kirby renewed the visitors' threat and victory was confirmed when Wadsworth released Kenny to bag the third goal.
Two goals in the first six minutes helped Ovenden West Riding Reserves on their way to a 3-1 success against Oakworth Reserves at Marley Stadium, Keighley.
Craig Margison scored in the first minute and Craig Boothroyd doubled the advantage. Andy Parker and Adam Sutcliffe were in excellent form for Ovenden, who had Jimmy Cummings pulling the strings in midfield.
Ovenden went 3-0 up on 67 minutes with a trademark strike from Chris Woodhouse before Gary Earle replied.
Copley United, Hebden Royd Red Star Reserves, Volunteer Arms, AFC Crossleys and Siddal Athletic Reserves are all through while the local casualties included Junction, who were unable to recovered from a woeful first half display and lost 7-3 at home to Ossett Two Brewers.
Junction conceded five goals against the slope and the wind after Mark Hartley might have drawn first blood for them.
Junction were 3-0 down before Dave Williams scored after good work from James Graley. However, Ossett surged 5-1 up and added two more to their tally before Richard Hartley scored twice on the break following good work from his brother Mark.
Brighouse Old Boys Reserves lost 2-0 to Bay Athletic Reserves, battling well to restrict their hosts to a wind assisted goal direct from a corner in the first half.
However, although Richard Rothwell, Paul Taylor and Marcus Wormald went close, they could not grab an equaliser and Bay scored a late second.
