Greetland boy Campion leads England home
DAVID Campion was in jubilant mood on his return to Halifax after England retained their European Under 19s squash title in Stavanger, Norway.
Former Queens Sports Club professional Campion has been England junior team boss since 2000 and in that time his charges have struck gold in seven out of the eight European events.
France were top seeds for the team event, having both the boys' and girls' individual title winners in their ranks, but Joe Lee upset Greg Marche in the first match on court and Neil Cordell was also a 3-0 winner, leaving the girls contest as a dead rubber. Camille Serme won it 2-0 for the French but England emerged 2-1 victors.
Campion, who lives at Greetland, said: "It was a great team performance.
"We knew it would be tough but the boys handled the situation really well and produced the goods when it mattered."
England had shown their strength in depth by taking third, fourth, fifth and sixth places in the boys' individual competition and second, third and fourth places in the girls' event.
