A SHAD Royston hat trick helped Halifax move clear in second place in National League One with a gutsy win over Featherstone.
Royston was switched to loose forward by coach Matt Calland after suffering a torrid time in his usual full back berth over the last three weeks.
And the Australian, one of a handful of changes to the side that was dumped out of the Northern Rail Cup by Celtic Crusaders last weekend, responded brilliantly.
With Miles Greenwood showing up well in the number one shirt, Calland will surely be tempted to persist with the experiment for next weekend's Challenge Cup derby against Huddersfield.
If the match was a personal vindication for Royston – and, by extension, Calland, who came in for his first real dose of terrace criticism last weekend – Fax could also afford to breath a collective sigh of relief after overcoming the triple challenge of another boggy playing surface, an aggressive, enthusiastic Rovers side and some truly baffling decisions from referee Craig Halloran.
True, a few precious moments excepted, this was more perspiration than inspiration, with plenty of errors from both sides on another foul afternoon.
But the truth is that these were three league points Halifax simply could not afford to lose.
And it showed, as Calland's men eased clear of their visitors in the second half after the scores had been locked at 8-8 at the break.
Fax began strongly, with a surging break from back rower Paul Smith taking his side deep into Rovers territory and Graham Holroyd picking out Royston with a perfectly-judged chip into the in-goal.
The stand off added the extras, and Fax might have had two more tries almost immediately, Smith breaking again and Damian Gibson, recalled on the wing, spilling a cut out pass from Sean Penkywicz with open field in front of him.
Fax did get over the line again after 10 minutes, David Larder scampering over on the left, only for desperate Featherstone defence to hold him on his back.
The plot unravelled slightly just before the quarter hour, Paul Southern's pass landing on the deck and ex-Wakefield and Castleford half back Paul Handforth scooting half the length of the field to score the try, prop Stuart Dickens converting.
Fax regained the lead almost immediately through a Holroyd penalty, but gradually their grip on proceedings began to loosen.
They weren't helped by the loss of Holroyd with an ankle injury, a departure which, combined with Penkywicz's obviously troublesome wrist, certainly hampered them.
Fortunately, when they did come under pressure, the porous defence of the last few weeks had been shored up sufficiently to withstand Rovers' attack.
That said, the visitors did get on terms on the final play of the half, Dickens slotting over the penalty after Fax had been caught offside.
The emergence of a hobbling Holroyd for the second half was encouraging, but it was another playmaker, replacement hooker Mick Govin, who conjured the killer play, scooting clear from deep inside his own half just seconds after the restart.
Rovers' defence scrambled back in numbers, but Royston's pace and awareness, and Govin's timing of the pass, saw Fax's number 13 sprinting away to the posts for a blistering try.
Holroyd converted, and Rovers' only response came from Dickens' boot as the visitors turned down a third set of six on the Fax line in favour of two easy points.
That decision spoke volumes about the way the game was going and Fax duly made sure of the spoils with three tries in eight minutes around three quarter time.
Centre James Haley got the first, racing over on the right after Govin, Holroyd, Penkywicz and Smith sent the ball whistling across the field.
And when Penkywicz, Smith and Haley combined superbly from the restart to send Damian Gibson galloping over in the corner, Holroyd goaling from the sideline, the game was as good as over at 24-10.
All that remained was for Royston to complete his hat trick, courtesy of a David Larder offload, and Rovers' Tony Tonks to end the game in the sin bin as their already fractious approach boiled over.
Halifax should have finished with a 40-point haul too, the officials chalking off a Smith try, engineered by Haley and Penkywicz, for a mystery forward pass.

STARMAN
With Jon Goddard ill, Andy Smith dropped and Lee Patterson and Mike Ratu both injured, yesterday was the perfect opportunity for Halifax's new look backline to stake a claim for permanent inclusion.
And no one took that opportunity better than centre James Haley, who must surely have played himself into the side for next weekend's Challenge Cup date with Huddersfield.
The former Ovenden junior was nothing less than efficient throughout, scoring a vital try in the second half, putting another on a plate for Damian Gibson and defending solidly.
Haley's awareness was typified early on, the youngster swooping onto a Paul Handforth grubber kick on his own line to preserve Fax's 6-0 lead.
Shad Royston takes two points in the season-long Star Man competition, with a super debut at loose forward.
The switch into the pack did nothing to curb the Australian's scoring instincts, with another three tries taking him to 15 for the season so far.
But Royston also produced some solid defence and direct running to complement his support play.
The final point goes to Paul Smith, who warmed up for the meeting with his former club next weekend with a typically assured performance.
Smith made a couple of breaks, had a hand in a couple of tries and should have had one himself too.
He also got through his usual mountain of tackling without any fuss or bother. Job done.

Well played boys... hard first half but better second half.. I must say we are pretty knackerd without holly and also the ref was a discgrace i know we moan about refs but some of the decisions confused me to heck. Anyway like i say keep up the hard work and we will pick our form back up.

Craig Halloran is an absolute moron. some of those decisions was baffling to say the least. i'm not saying the guy was biased, just that he is a clueless waste of space. didn't allow the game to flow, turned his back on the ball far too often (perhaps explaining some of his more random calls!) and generally bored me to tears.

good game fax, plenty to build on here. look out giants!
