HALIFAX boss Matt Calland was left with a "double migraine" ahead of next weekend's Challenge Cup tie at York after his reshuffled line up smashed Workington 88-6 in a record-breaking Northern Rail Cup romp at the Shay yesterday.
A side missing eight senior players - all rested rather than injured - blew Town off the park in the opening 10 minutes, racing to a 22-0 lead before going on to set new benchmarks for Fax's highest ever score and biggest winning margin.
Wingman Lee Patterson led the scoring with a hat trick of touchdowns and a penalty try, with stand off Graham Holroyd claiming 28 points from a try and 12 conversions.
"It was an outstanding performance and it gives me a double migraine for next week now," said Calland, whose side have now scored nearly 140 points in their last two matches.
"It shows what a strong squad we have, because we left quite a few top players out and the guys on the fringes came in and did a fantastic job for us.
"Everyone who didn't play was rested, some of them have slight knocks but they could all have played.
"With the squad we have, we can rotate players without it hampering our performances.
"We have been talking this week about improving our standards and being consistent, which is something we didn't really manage to achieve last season, and I think this was probably the first time this year we have played for the full 80 minutes.
"We didn't want another half a game performance and I set them targets for each half and they ticked the boxes on most of those.
"We treated it as two games, and although we overplayed a little bit in the second half, which I think you are going to do in a game like that, as a coach, I'm over the moon.
"We have to finish teams off and we did that."
While Calland preferred to focus on some slick teamwork, he could not avoid tipping his hat in the direction of Holroyd, who ran the game from start to finish.
"I wouldn't like to pick anyone out because I think you could probably name half the team," said Calland, who named utility back Miles Greenwood in an unfamiliar half back role.
"But Holroyd's been a different class so far this season.
"We've adjusted a few aspects of his game and it's made a massive difference to him.
"That left side attack looks formidable at times, I certainly wouldn't like to be defending against it, put it that way.
"I thought Miles did okay for his first game at seven, we need to get him to release the ball a little bit more but I think he showed he can slot in there if we need him. We are still looking for another half back but we can certainly play well with Miles there."
