GETTING back to basics was the only viable option open to Halifax RUFC according to new club president Tim Greenwood.
Greenwood, a former player at Ovenden Park, took over the role from Tom Hoyle at the club's agm, and immediately pledged to make sure the club moved forward while retaining a purely amateur ethic.
Halifax took a massive drop in status when the club was pulled from the National League set-up and decided to start again in the less than lofty surrounds of Yorkshire Six.
Now Greenwood is relishing the opportunity to help rebuild the club again from the bottom and insists that Halifax will thrive without the burden of finding cash to pay their players.
"There are, of course, people who are devastated that we are starting again in Yorkshire Six," said Greenwood
"However, if they were to look deeply into club affairs, then they would see that the only financially viable way for the club to survive was to go down this route.
"It is in effect a brand new start. There is a new committee, a new and existing membership and by the start of the season we will have about 40-45 senior players signed up, all of whom will be unpaid.
"We also plan to have a veterans side while the junior section is strong.
"Our coach, John Henry, is also, and will remain at his insistence, an unpaid member of the club.
"The theme is amateur rugby football. Everyone involved with Halifax RUFC has a very strong resolve to ensure that the club survives.
"It would be nice to start climbing back up the leagues and whilst that is important, the main priority is to get back to basics and start enjoying our club again as well as genuinely welcoming friends and guests back to Ovenden Park."
Greenwood would love to emulate Old Brodleians who have made steady progress both on and off the field as well as nurturing an enviable junior set-up.
Greenwood referred to the Woodhead outfit as "an inspiration to club rugby" and insisted that Halifax could follow the blueprint if things are done correctly.
"We may not have the right to be the best rugby union club in West Yorkshire, or in Halifax, any more, but we do have the right to be a happy club where our families and friends can come and enjoy themselves," added Greenwood.
"It must be said how much we have appreciated the support of our commercial and individual sponsors over many years and many have agreed to continue with sponsorship, albeit at a reduced rate, and the money will be used to improve the clubhouse instead of paying players."

HALIFAX will be forced to officially use the name Halifax Vikings for their forthcoming Yorkshire Six campaign.
The club had wanted to revert to the traditional name of Halifax RUFC.
However, as the Vikings were already registered as the team that would compete in Yorkshire Six before the senior side pulled out of the National League set-up, the Ovenden Park club will have to keep the Vikings label for this season at least.
It is expected they will revert to Halifax RUFC for the 2010/11 campaign.
