BUSTLING back row forward Richard Brown is hoping that the all-round improvement the team showed against Fylde last Saturday will provide a springboard for long overdue success.
Although Halifax slipped to their fifth consecutive National Three (North) defeat with the 35-17 reverse at Ovenden Park, they did at least show signs of improved teamwork, fitness and a cutting down on the errors that have spoiled the early weeks of their campaign.
That, according to Brown, lifted the spirits enormously in the dressing room and he is now calling on his teammates to use that new found positivity to spur them on to better things.
Brown knows that Halifax will not have many better opportunities to end their losing streak with today's visit of a Loughborough Students side who have yet to win themselves on the road.
But it will all be down to application and a fierce determination - qualities that Halifax displayed for the vast majority of last weekend's game.
"We ran Fylde very close and that gave us a real lift," said Brown. "Although it was another defeat, we went in after the game feeling very positive all round.
"There was always a point up until the last 10 minutes when we always felt we could win the game.
"Even when we were trailing, we played with a belief that we could pull it back.
"The scoreline certainly did not reflect the game.
"It was just a pity that we allowed them to score two late tries.
"When you're chasing a game you have to try things that you hope will give you an advantage, but there is always the danger that you can play into the opposition's hands.
"And the fitness held up really well. It is an area where we have been criticised and so we have been working really hard on that aspect and it seems to be paying off now."
Brown was particularly pleased by the way the players worked together - another area where Halifax have not always been at their best this season.
"I really think the boys had taken on a new attitude where we were fully supportive of each other and very focused on what we needed to do rather than looking back on what had gone," added Brown.
"There was a totally different feel around the dressing room. The previous week I think there were some issues with people looking to blame others instead of looking at themselves."
Brown is well aware that a victory can kick-start a season. And while acknowledging the disappointment that Halifax have still to register, he is confident that, providing they carry on the good work, the first win will be just around the corner.
"Obviously it has been a far from ideal start to the season and it is disappointing that is has taken five games to get to the stage where we are producing a 70 minute performance," he said
"But I feel that now we are starting to see some kind of progression as far as cohesion is concerned.
"We played as a team for the majority of the match against Fylde and that is something that has been missing so far.
"Hopefully this is the start of better times.
"We have to take the positives from the Fylde game into the match with Loughborough.
"It is a good platform to move on from, but if we drop back we will find ourselves back to square one and nobody wants that to happen.
"We have to push on to the next level now and the next level has to be a win.
"Personally I can see us doing that against Loughborough - if we can use Saturday's display as a base."
