TWO sides struggling for results produced the almost inevitable bore draw at the Shay last night.
There might have been goals with a little more steadier finishing, but the overall game barely deserved them as Town and Grays failed to provide much entertainment for the meagre 1,104 inside the ground and the thousands watching on television.

In short, it was a poor advert for Blue Square Premier football.

It was a complete contrast to the previous home game against Burton which, despite also finishing in a draw, provided rich entertainment.

The one real plus Town can take from the game was a first clean sheet for eight games.

Adam Quinn and Jake Wright in particular played their part in ensuring that.

Lewis Killeen was his usual industrious self, Steve Torpey produced flashes of promise down the left and Darryn Stamp, playing despite not being 100 per cent fit, made a difference when he came on after the break.

But in general it was as lacklustre a display from the Shaymen as we have seen this season.

In mitigation, with barely 13 fully fit players - including two goalkeepers and a couple of left backs - there was little scope for manager Chris Wilder to do any more.

And in the final half hour of the game, if there was going to be a winner it would have been them.

But ultimately neither goalkeeper had a meaningful shot to save and the game will quickly be forgotten.

Tom Kearney had an early, wayward shot and Daryl Taylor was unlucky to be called back by the linesman's flag after Steve Bushell and Killeen had combined well.

At the other end, Ernie Cooksey was not far away from connecting with Denis Oli's right wing cross and a Stuart Thurgood free kick went right across the Town goal before it was cleared behind.

Torpey did not make the connection he would have wanted with a weak clearance from Grays keeper Danny Knowles and fired Town's best chance of the opening 45 minutes over the top after being played in by Taylor.

Grays went closest to breaking the deadlock, though, six minutes before the break from an Oli cross. Cooksey headed the ball back across goal for Karl Murray who somehow managed to fire over from a couple of yards.

Town started the second half brightly with Killeen spreading the ball wide for Wright who found Taylor. His lay off gave Torpey the chance to run into the area, but his right foot shot was always rising over the bar.

Cooksey had a shot that deflected wide as Grays threatened briefly and Danny Kedwell fired across goal and wide from the resulting corner.

Apart from a couple of Thurgood free kicks - one that went wide off a defender and another that missed the target all by itself - the visitors offered little more in the way of a threat.

In contrast, Town had spells when they threatened to score, but were unable to find the killer touch.

Kearney's 78th-minute free kick skimmed off Quinn's head and off Stamp before coming to rest in the keeper's arms.

A minute later Taylor's cross was cleared to Bushell who found Killeen, but his shot flew wide.

Torpey did well down the left with nine minutes remaining and sent over an inviting cross, but Stamp's connection was not sufficient to send the ball goalwards.

And when Ryan Toulson's right wing cross was only cleared as far as Bushell, he tried his luck but the ball faded to the wrong side of the left hand upright.

The best two chances came in the final three minutes of the game.

Taylor did well to get himself into the area before a block tackle sent him crashing to the floor and the opportunity had gone.

Then Killeen and Taylor combined to release Stamp whose shot beat the keeper but bounced wide of the right hand post.

Oli broke in the first minute of added time only to send his shot into the dozen or so Grays fans in the North Stand.

And the Shaymen were unable to take advantage of a gift corner in the final minute as Grays held on for a point.

Star Shayman
It was not a night when candidates for man of the match were lining up to stake their claims.
Lewis Killeen did what he could to buck that trend but was left as frustrated by the scoreline as the rest of his teammates.
He combined well with colleagues on a number of occasions to create openings, but the end product was lacking as the Shaymen drew a blank.
Steve Torpey also played his part in trying to lift the team with some tricky work down the left hand side.
But he will have been disappointed by the fact that he failed to work Grays keeper Danny Knowles late in the first half when he tried to curl one in from the edge of the area.
A clean sheet was something for the defence to build on and the whole back four played their part.
The pick of the bunch was Jake Wright who threw himself in front of shots on a number of occasions to ensure there was no way through for the visitors.
Killeen takes the three points on offer in our season long competition with Torpey two and Wright one.

can only assume this was Mr D's first ever live football game if he thinks it's the worst ever seen. And much of the football this season has been good and entertaining. Doesn't take much to bring out the boo boys does it - funny, they are never seen when the performance is good!
