HALIFAX coach Matt Calland believes his side's cup hoodoo will benefit their blossoming National League One title challenge.
Fax, level with Salford at the top of the league ladder, will only play once over the next three weekends, against Dewsbury in nine days time, after exiting both the Challenge Cup and the Northern Rail Cup at the hands of Huddersfield and Celtic Crusaders respectively.
And while Calland was candid enough to admit he would have prefered to be still involved in both competitions, he is focused on making the most of the situation.
"I think it is something that will work for us rather than against us," said the former Bradford and England back, who will aim to strike the ideal balance between rest and fine-tuning his side's game.
"It's a long season and this will enable us to give the players some time off as well as the chance to work on things we can't usually do.
"We will have an opposed session against the under 21s tonight and then give the boys a couple of days rest.
"We have quite a few players over the age of 30 and for them it's a rare chance to recuperate physically during a long, hard year.
"For the younger lads I think it's more a mental thing, a break from the routine of coming to training and a chance to spend some time with their family and friends rather than thinking about rugby all the time.
"We'll certainly be a lot fresher when we play Dewsbury next weekend."
Calland also reported good news on the injury front, with the hamstring problem that forced star centre Jon Goddard to limp out of last weekend's 56-14 win over Batley not as bad as first feared.
"Jon's tweaked his hammy, but it doesn't seem to be too bad," said Calland. "He's got every chance of being fit for next weekend."
