Stainland Stags 42
Guiseley 10
(Pennine Division Five)
JOHN Hopkinson capped a man of the match display with a hat-trick of tries as Stags won a contest between two sides with only one league win under their belts.
The home side looked to have plenty on their plates when they turned round to face the slope with only a 12-6 lead but they stepped up a gear an easy success.
Captain Tom Williams got Stags off to a flying start following Shaun Whiteley's break and although the visitors went 6-4 up, Paul Davies took several defenders with him on a 25-yard charge to the line and Bob Simcock also crossed after good work from fellow youngster Jason McCulloch and Matty Day.
Hopkinson raced in from 50 yards following a break by Mark Doughty at the start of the second period.
Sam Oddy converted and was on target again to make it 24-6 after Simcock had gone 60 yards following a set move involving Paul Barwick and Hopkinson.
Following strong defence by Greg Statham and Jake Bottomley, Hopkinson picked up a loose ball and sold an outrageous dummy to cross for another converted try.
Adam Charity and Adam Walton repelled Guiseley attacks and 17-year-old Danny Hodgson produced some good centre play to add the next try, converted by Oddy.
Guiseley scored in the corner after a repeat set of six tackles but Hopkinson appropriately bagged the final try after good forward play by Whiteley, Mark Graham and Davies. Oddy converted.
Illingworth 22
Ackworth Jaguars 24
(Pennine Division One)
Illingworth and Ackworth fought out a close encounter at Mason Green with visitors just prevailing.
Ackworth took the lead after two minutes when Dale Campbell broke through some weak tackling on his way to the line. Fullback Mark Patrice halted the giant prop but was unable to prevent the score. Kyle Jarrett added the extras.
Illingworth hit back almost immediately when Darren Williams went on a 60 yard run to the line.
The home side were now dominating with some good work from Andrew McElroy, Tom Ashcroft and Matthew Bagnall.
Chris Sykes went close to scoring before some good handling ended with Chris Shaw crossing for an unconverted try.
The visitors regained the lead when Dean Shepherd crashed through to score a fine individual try and it stayed at 8-10 up to the interval.
Ackworth had a dream start to the second half when Chris O'Toole pounced on his own kick through to score.
Illingworth fought back and had a period in the ascendancy before Williams danced through the defence for a try. Shaw's kick tied the scores.
Poor defence allowed Ackworth to score tries through Paul Hopkinson and Shepherd. Jarrett added one conversion for a lead of 24-14.
Illingworth were struggling to get back in the game before a crunching tackle from Mark Clifford turned defence into attack. Andrew Laheney released Williams who completed his hat trick and minutes later the young speedster crossed for his fourth try.
