PENNINE League champions and Fee Cup holders Halifax Irish will get a chance to showcase their National Conference ambitions when they face Premier League powerhouse Siddal in the Halifax Championship final at Brighouse Sports Club tonight (7.0).
Irish, who have made a startling transformation from lower league whipping boys in recent years, missed out in last season's decider, losing to the since disgraced Brighouse Rangers in an extra time thriller.
And coach Andrew Brocklehurst, who will pit his wits against former professional teammates and current Siddal coaches Lee Greenwood and Luke Robinson, revealed that tonight's match-up could be a regular occurence if the ambitious Irish get their way.
"We definitely have ambitions to play in the Conference," said the Salford City Reds back rower, who will have the recalled Lee Brook in the side in place of the suspended Gareth Matthews.
"We're a progressive club and we've got a few plans in place to help us get there in the next few seasons.
"We don't really want to be in the Pennine League for more than another couple of years.
"It's a really high standard that Siddal are playing at, week in, week out, and you would have to make them favourites tonight.
"But it's cup football and the underdogs always have a chance in a one-off game."
Robinson and Greenwood, who watched an under-strength Siddal line up bow out to the Irish at the semi final stage last season, will field their top team, with winger Matt Dunn and Halifax reserve half back Shaun Garrod the only absentees.
"Irish are a good side with a lot of players I played against when I was a junior," said Robinson.
"It's a bit of a difficult situation for us, because people will expect us to win.
"But it's a chance to end the year on a good note and we'll be giving it everything we've got."
The two clubs' second strings also have their eye on some silverware tomorrow afternoon when they clash in the Halifax ARL Supplementary Cup final at Chevinedge, an occasion which will also see Siddal's new club house in operation.
Irish go into this match as slight favourites after winning by a 14-0 score line at home in the corresponding league match just over a month ago.
