A TREMENDOUS season finished on a disappointing note for Brods in last night's Yorkshire Shield final at Huddersfield YMCA.
A string of high-profile absentees meant the Woodhead men didn't have enough pace or power to seriously trouble Sandal in this battle of the champions.
A typically spirited and dogged effort meant they trailed to only a try from No 8 Richard Wade at the interval but Yorkshire One title winners Sandal stretched away into a 17-5 lead in the third quarter and added a fourth try in added time at the end.
Brods, who got on the scoresheet courtesy of winger James Cowling's 52nd-minute touch down, clearly missed the likes of skipper Ollie Akroyd - who gets married tomorrow - and top-scoring trio James Marshall, Adam Standeven and Luke Scrimshaw. Props Jamie McLaughlin and Joe McArthur and utility man 'Doc' Holbrough were working and even Brods' legendary strength in depth wasn't enough to avoid just a second loss of the season.
Player-coach Nick O'Connor, who had only previously tasted defeat at Spalding in the fifth round of the EDF National Vase, said: "If we'd had a full-strength team it could have made the difference.
"But the lads who went out there gave their all against a team I think will go very well in North Two East next season."
A wide pitch which was in perfect condition made for an open contest and Sandal showed their intentions to spin the ball from the word go and also had the upper hand in the scrums.
In an untidy opening, Yorkshire Two champs Brods won the first five linouts with great work from Matt Willis at the front but were hampered by a string of knock-ons.
They turned down a kickable penalty after 11 minutes in favour of a punt to the corner but were then penalised after lineout possession had been secured.
Gareth Standeven's missed tackle allowed big Sam Tee to make ground for Sandal, who capitalised on the position when winger Simon Frewin sent the burly Wade charging over on 17 minutes.
Brods responded with a tremendous move involving backs Standeven, Andy Clay and Matt Hoyle but a lack of support meant Sandal turned over the ball 10 metres from their own line.
Back came Jim Kilfoyle's Wakefield based outfit and pressed hard before Brods' stand-in fullback Joe Baker intercepted with a chance to go the length of the field, only for referee Jonathan Hill to award Sandal a penalty which stand off Tom Smith sliced.
Scrum half Adam Jackson, who was as good as anybody in a Brods shirt, got back to deny strong-running centre Danny Mitchell with a fine tackle at the start of the second half.
However, open side flanker Alastair Burgess crossed 10 metres to the left of the posts on 46 minutes and when Smith converted things were looking ominous for Brods, who trailed 12-0.
O'Connor started to ring the changes and young lock Tom Hanson made an immediate impact, providing a link between Jackson and Cowling for the right winger to dive in at the corner, Hoyle failing with the kick.
Blind side Sean Maguire made a storming run to put Sandal back on the attack and a powerful scrum surge created the platform for Smith to go round Hoyle on the blind side and touch down to make it 17-5.
Standeven and Baker combined over 70 metres and Sandal were reduced to 14 men when replacement Scott Seckham was yellow carded for a high tackle.
But Brods were unable to make their extra man pay and their opponents completed the scoring two minutes into injury time through Wade with Mr Hill taking an eternity to award the score.

Great effort against a team from a league above. Surely the courier doesnt need to highlight a few absentees as some sort of excuse for defeat. Have a bit of respect for the players taking their place.
