Rugby Union: Heath fight hard in Flanders
AN INTREPID touring party from Heath took on quality sides from across Europe along with teams from exotic locations such as Moscow, Cairo and South Africa in an international tournament this week.
The team travelled to Dendermonde, Belgium, to take part in the Flanders 10's rugby tournament and although strictly a 'social' side they performed well against high class opposition.
Heath's first game was against Bordeaux, which they lost 20-10, with Ian Downsborough scoring Heath's two tries.
Second up was Halifax's twin town team from Aachen, Germany, which resulted in a 5-5 draw with Downsborough again the only Heath try scorer.
The final game was against the hosts Dedermonde, played in front of a substantial crowd, but unfortunately a Heath side missing missing several key players due to injury were outclassed and went down 40-0.
The eventual winners of the tournament were the Belgian national team Under 25 squad.
