Rushden and Diamonds v Halifax Town: Shaymen bidding to defy odds yet again
TOWN take a break from the business of securing their Blue Square Premier status tonight when they travel to Nene Park to face Rushden & Diamonds in the northern final of the Setanta Shield.
And the Shaymen's fringe players will be looking to hand the squad a morale booster ahead of Saturday's tricky trip to Exeter City when important league points will be up for grabs.
The Town players showed they have what it takes in this competition by sending a strong Burton Albion side crashing to a 3-1 defeat a couple of weeks ago.
And anything approaching that display would be most welcome as Halifax try to put thoughts of a three-match losing streak in the league out of their minds.
Town have already played the Diamonds three times this season, and have yet to register their first win over Garry Hill's men.
The Shaymen were denied a home victory back in September by a late own goal after Steve Torpey had fired them in front and they were knocked out of the FA Trophy on home soil at the beginning of February.
A week late they travelled to Nene Park where Andy Campbell's goal looked to have given them three points, but they had to settle for one after conceding a controversial late equaliser.
The sides have met six times at Nene Park down the years in the Conference, Football League and FA Cup.
But it has never been a particularly happy hunting ground for the Shaymen whose solitary victory came in a league clash in October 2006 when Torpey was again the scorer.
Even in the Conference winning campaign, the Diamonds got the better of Town on home soil, recording a comfortable 4-0 win.
Hill's side have reached tonight's final after three away wins in earlier rounds.
They began their Shield campaign with a 1-0 win at Cambridge on the same day Town were winning at Histon.
They followed that by beating Kidderminster 3-1 at Aggborough and reached the northern final with a comfortable 4-0 victory at Northwich Vics.
In addition to Histon and Burton, the Shaymen have won at Nuneaton.
