AN EXCITING Doubles Cup final brought the curtain down on the Halifax Association's winter season in style as Oakland Raiders edged out YMEN.
Oakland with a handicap of 45 points, made a poor start as YMEN's Frazer Krischke and Dave Mosley restricted Steve Horrocks and Tony Hemingway to 29 points, while in the next set Krischke and Shamir Bose won by the identical score against Horrocks an
d Robert Wright to make big inroads into the handicap.
But in the next set Hemingway and Wright beat Mosley/Bose 42-37 to give Oakland an overall lead of 24 points then in the fourth game Horrocks and Wright added a further six points to the lead with an outstanding victory against Kriscke/Mosley.
The next four sets were won by YMEN, but all by narrow margins.
Krischke and Bose beat Horrocks and Hemingway 42-40, followed by Mosley and Bose seeing off Horrocks and Wright 42-39, then Krischke and Mosley beat Hemingway and Wright 42-33 and in the penultimate set Krischke and Bose saw off Hemingway/Wright 42-40.
That meant Oakland had a 14 point advantage going into the final set and strolled to victory, winning 42-39 to become inaugural winners of what may become an annual event.
In the Consolation Doubles final for the first round losers, Old Town Hares beat HxTTC Leopards by 46 points.
Congratulations to Embassy who won Division One in their debut season and Greetland Social C who won Division Two convincingly, losing only their opening fixture against BT, and also unbeaten Tradesmen who won Division Three.
This coming weekend see Halifax TTC stages the Yorkshire Closed Championships with the junior events on Saturday when James Berry is top seed in the boys' event followed by the senior events on Sunday when the home flag is flown by Steve Thomas, Shaun Forbes and Simon Pugh.
