Just four years ago, Telford United were in a similar position to the Shaymen as the club, then long established Conference members, went out of existence.

But a new club, AFC Telford, emerged from the ashes and after climbing the non-league pyramid, narrowly missed out on regaining its Blue Square Premier place last week.

And AFC Telford chairman Lee Carter offered an uplifting message of hope to Town's distraught fans, reeling from the news of possible liquidation.

Carter said the new club was in a vibrant state, crowds were up on those pulled in by the old set up, and fortunes on the field were also improving. He saw no reason why Town or a new club taking over the mantle could not follow in their footsteps.

"We have been following the events at Town closely and we know how the fans feel because it brings back the memory of what happened to us four years ago," he said.

"But we managed to reform and in some ways it was the best thing that has happened to us.

"It was very hard work at the time and we all had a few sleepless nights, but it was all worth it and the club is in a very healthy state at present."

The newly reformed club went into the UniBond League North and gained two consecutive promotions, and though they just missed out on going back to the Blue Square Premier this time when they lost a play off semi-final to Barrow, Carter said the club was in very good shape and there was a tremendous spirit among the fans and officials.

"We have built up close links with the local community and embraced the supporters and I can't under-estimate how important the involvement of the fans is as they really feel they have a stake in the club," he said.
And Carter added that he and his colleagues would be willing to offer guidance to any new set up.

"There's no reason why Halifax could not follow our model and we are always on the end of the phone for advice if needed," he said.
