NEW recruit Tommy Gallagher admitted he still had a lot to learn after making his rugby union debut for Halifax in last Saturday's 39-15 National Three (North) defeat by leaders Caldy at Ovenden Park.
The former Hull KR and Widnes loose-forward held his hands up and admitted that he believed two of Caldy's five tries came as a result of his errors.

However, he has pledged to continue the steep learning curve and is anxious to show Halifax just what he is capable of.

"It was my first ever rugby union game and I struggled a bit, particularly early on," said Gallagher.

"We conceded a couple of soft tries and they might have come from my turnovers. It wasn't the best and it is something I have to work on.

"It is more technical than rugby league, but I am confident I can learn and I am looking forward to that challenge."

Gallagher arrived at Ovenden Park with a decent reputation in the 13-man code where he started at Batley and, apart from his stints at Hull KR and Widnes, also had a spell in France with Toulouse.

And it was Halifax's Batley connection of Oli Marns and Iain Gordon that made up his mind to sign.

"Obviously I know Oli and Iain Gordon and I thought that if I was going to try something new I would rather it be at a club where I knew a few people," he said.

"I have played in two Challenge Cup semi-finals and done quite a bit with rugby league so I decided it was time to try a new challenge and set the bar a bit higher.

"I was a bit restricted in my appearances last year so when I came out of my contract at Widnes I decided I wanted to give rugby union a go.

"I am really enjoying it at Halifax. I am enjoying the training and they are a great bunch of lads.

"It is early days but everybody is helping me out. My main aim now is to do a job for the club for the rest of the season."

While disappointed with Saturday's result, Gallagher feels there is enough talent in the squad to start turning the season around.

And he is backing himself to play a part in that turnaround.

"I thought in the second half that we could have pushed them a bit closer," added Gallagher

"We dug deep in the second half. There was a lot of talk on the pitch, a lot of encouragement and I believe we can improve ahead of the next game at Darlington

"Harry (coach Dave Harrison) threw me in there and told me to run hard and tackle and I certainly tried my best.

"The more experience I get the more Halifax will see the best of me

"Playing in the centre was a bit different to what I am used to in rugby league. You are a bit more exposed defensively and perhaps have a little less ball.

"But again, it is something else I will have to get used to."

FLANKER Dan Solomi has followed teammate Dave Hall and signed for National Two side Wharfedale.

The former Yorkshire under 20 player made his debut for the Greens in their 22-13 home defeat by Blackheath on Saturday.
