A SMALL army of Halifax Town fans will make a pilgrimage to Wales as a defiant move to show their club is still alive.
Jon Shaw, one of the six players still under contract to the club, is in line to represent England in a non-league international against Wales at Rhyl tomorrow week.

And Town fans are hoping to don their shirts and take their flags and banners over for the game, not only to support the striker but to show that despite the traumatic events of recent days which have left the club facing liquidation, the name of Halifax Town lives on.

"We hope it will be a clear show of support for Town and also show everyone that there are still Halifax Town supporters out there," said John Barker, who came up with the idea.

And Barker, a long standing Town fan who is manager of fans' team AFC Halifax, has appealed to as many supporters of the club as possible to join them on the road to Rhyl for the game.

"I understand we already have one coach full and we are hoping for more, and if we took around 200-300 fans over it would be fantastic and give out a clear sign that there is support for the club out there and a determination to keep it alive.

"Whatever happens, it should be a really good day out and the fact that it is only £3 to get onto the game is another reason to hopefully attract more Town fans down there."

The game is part of an international tournament in which the English national semi-professional side, which is these days known as England C, are competing against their equivalent sides from Wales, Scotland and Gibraltar.

Shaw is in the squad for the tournament and if he is in the starting line up, he will become the final player in Town's history to win a representative honour should the old club fold.

But Barker and his fellow supporters plan to be at Rhyl whatever the next few days brings in terms of the club's fate, and he added that the AFC Halifax team would continue next season as before, regardless of what happens at The Shay.
