Torquay United 3
Halifax Town 1
FORGET the scoreline. Town were much, much better than that suggests.
But their inability to deal with Torquay United's second half set pieces meant they returned home from the English Riviera with nothing to show for their efforts.
For long spells of the game at Plainmoor, the Shaymen were clearly the better side.
They had almost twice as many shots as their hosts, but were made to pay for failing to make more of them as the Gulls claimed the spoils.
With Tom Kearney and Anthony Griffith running the show from midfield, Halifax always looked a threat.
And for much of the contest they looked comfortable in dealing with the home side's attacking threat.
But a goal early in the second half - for the third time in the last four games - was a blow.
And, after Jon Shaw had bagged his third goal for Town from the penalty spot to level the scores just past the hour, all their good work was undone in the final 11 minutes as Torquay struck twice.
Town started well, taking the game to the home side with Lewis Killeen, who linked well with Jake Wright on the left, firing in a shot after just five minutes.
A minute later he turned provider as he combined with Shaw whose cross was met at the near post by Darryn Stamp who fired just wide.
And when Cortez Belle headed the first of a series of Tom Kearney corners over the bar after 10 minutes it looked like it would be only a matter of time before Town broke through.
Torquay responded with a Tim Sills header from Tony Bedeau's cross in the 20th minute, but Craig Mawson somehow managed to keep the point blank effort out.
And Chris Zebroski latched onto a Sills flick only to drag his shot from the left hand corner of the area across goal and wide.
The home side pushed Town back at the start of the second half with Mawson racing to the edge of his area to deny Sills and Wright gatting back to force the ball behind as the Gulls frontman threatened moments later.
But, from the resulting corner, the Shaymen cracked, Kevin Nicholson delivering from the left and Chris Robertson heading home at the far post.
Back came the Shaymen with a Wright shot that forced home keeper Simon Rayner to dive to his left and turnthe ball round the post.
And soon after Stamp flicked on for Shaw, but he was unable to get the ball out from under his feet and his shot was weak.
Town deservedly levelled in the 61st minute after a fine cross from Danny Forrest had been knocked down by Killeen. Shaw was brought down by Matt Hockley as he tried to turn but got up to fire past Rayner from the spot.
Halifax were well on top at that stage and went in search of a second goal.
Forrest's 64th minute shot was cleared to Griffith whose well struck shot was deflected wide for a corner and, after Forrest had again raided down the right and pulled back for Ryan Toulson, he crossed deep
