Former Boathouse Volleyball Club player Kieran O'Malley made his first appearance for Great Britain, in the 3-0 win against Norway, at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield.
The call up was a remarkable achievement for Kieran, as the 20 year old former Brighouse High School pupil is still a student at Sheffield University, whereas the rest of the GB squad have been playing in the Dutch Pro A volleyball league, in preparation for the 2012 London Olympics.
However, O'Malley has impressed with several England appearances and his performances in the English National Volleyball League. He plays as one of the two setters for Sheffield VC, who have an unusually young side with no player over 24.
They finished second in Division One and recently beat the league champions London Malory in the National Cup finals.
Kieran only started playing volleyball seriously four years ago, when a knee injury halted a promising football career.
However, he has been around volleyball all his life as both his parents, Julie and Kevin O'Malley were keen players.
