HALIFAX'S evergreen prop Frank Watene has a spring in his step again - and it's all down to the club's young players.
Watene has been at his blockbusting best in recent weeks and was in brilliant form again as Fax downed Widnes 32-16 at the Shay on Thursday night.
And the 31 year old, who has already re-signed with the club for 2009, believes Matt Calland's rich mix of youth and experience is the perfect recipe for more play off success.
"I feel 10 years younger than I am at the moment," said Watene, who won a National League One Grand Final with Castleford in 2005.
"A lot of the guys, people like me, David Wrench, Paul Smith and Graham Holroyd, have been in this position in finals series before and I think the team is benefitting from that.
"The young guys are feeding off our experience and we feed off their enthusiasm.
"Look at Mark Flanagan, he had a great game on Thursday, some of the hits he was putting in were unbelievable.
"You can see he is excited to be playing finals football for the first time and that's rubbing off on me and the rest of the boys.
"The enthusiasm we had in training all week fed through to the game.
"Guys stood up out there and did special things and special times."
Halifax will now host the winners of tomorrow's meeting between Leigh and Whitehave, and Watene reminded his teammates they cannot afford to bask in the glow of their victory over the Vikings.
"We need to forget about the Widnes game and start again now," said Watene.
"We have beaten Leigh and Whitehaven already, but whoever comes here next week will pick their game up.
"But I think our heads are in the right place and we will keep moving forward.
"We are hitting our straps at the right time, and although we still have a lot of things to work on we now have another game to do it.
"I think our defence on our own line on Thursday night, which has been terrible at times this year, really showed how committed we are to making that Grand Final."
