BOSS Chris Wilder was clearly shocked by the news that Halifax Town are set to fold, ending 97 years of professional football in Calderdale.
And he admitted that even up to 2pm yesterday he was hoping that a resolution could be found.

"Obviously Wednesday's meeting didn't go very well and yesterday we just sat and hoped that everything would be sorted out," he said.

"Everybody is devastated.

"I have just had to tell 20 players that there is no longer a club, I have my general manager in bits and I feel for the supporters.

"I also feel for sport in the long term in and around the area because I know what part a football club plays in a community.

"I think it will have widespread ramifications on a lot of things."

Wilder added that he would leave the club after six years in charge with no regrets about anything his side had done on the pitch.

"I had a few regrets when my playing career was over," he said. "I never really gave it my all.

"But I know deep down that I have given my life and soul to this club.

"I have no regrets about how I have gone about it.

"I have been here since 2002 and we built it up from nothing with a budget in the bottom third in the league.

"We have had a couple of top 10 finishes culminating in an unbelievable play off final experience.

"The last two seasons have been a struggle on the pitch.

"We came through the situation of having 10 points docked going into the last month of the season. I thought I had seen it all in the last six years, but this tops the lot.

"I have gone through every emotion, every problem anyone could have at a club.

"But I have gone through it in the knowledge that we wanted to build the club up and move it forward.

"We have had unbelievable hurdles to get over in the last six years, now one off the pitch has not been cleared and the club finds itself in this situation.

"There will be regrets that things were not handled a little differently off the pitch.

"On the pitch we have done an excellent job in keeping it going and surviving in an ever-progressing league.

"It has been an up and down ride and there have been lows. I have learned a lot and I am proud of what I achieved."

Altrincham are set to be handed a reprieve from relegation for the third successive season.

In 2006/07, the Cheshire side finished 21st, but stayed up because Boston were relegated straight through to Blue Square North due to financial problems.

And 12 months earlier they finished bottom but stayed up when Canvey Island volunteered to go down and Scarborough were expelled for breaching league rules.

Thanks Chris for everything over the last 6 years. You have put up with so much over this time. Good luck for the future. You've been a brilliant manager for Halifax Town.

I heard with disapointment that yet another professional sporting club based in Halifax had gone bust. Now I might be a grumpy old man but I remember when Halifax had a professional Speedway, Basketball, (full time) RL team (full time) football team, and what do we have now........er a part time RL side, so what has gone wrong? I live in an area of Germany that has many similarites with Calderdale, so lok at the comparisons.
My village is about the same size as Warley, the village football club has three pitches, two of which have floodlights and one is all weather. The local council, about the size of Hebden bridge, has indoor and outdoor tennis courts, which are used all year and not just the two weeks of Wimbledon, a 50 metere swimming pool and a 400 meter ourdoor artifical running track, again with floodlights. Finally, the main town in the area, with about 80000 inhabitans,so about the same size as Halifax, has a 45000 seater football stadium, the biggest outdoor swimming pool in Germany, several all weather running tracks, every football side has two or three pitches, like my village side with lights and an all weather pitch. So what am I saying? provide the infrastructure and you will get the success you deserve, expect the local football/rugby/athletics club to survive in the conditions thay have in Halifax and you will get what you deserve......nothing!

I will say though that providing the stadia is not always the answer, the local football club, have, as i said a 45000 seather stadium, the regularly get 30000 people watching them.........and the stand on the verge of relegation to the 3rd bundesliga!

Rugby League was never a part-time game until; recently. Our RL Club is still doing us proud. I hope they can continue to do so

Goodbye Chris, you did us proud. Thanks for the memories. I am really upset to see Halifax Town go out of business. I have followed the club for nearly 20 years and have experience the highs and lows taht go with supporting any football team.

I was that the Stevenage game and waited with all the other hardend Town follows for news from the Altrincham game of the result. Once the full-time whistle was blown and the score line came through I cheered and celebrated, with tears in my eyes.

R.I.P. Halifax Town Football Club - you will be missed by all that followed you.
