Woking 1 Halifax Town 0: Familiar story for Shaymen

IT was a familiar tale of away day woe for Town at the Kingfield Stadium as they dominated for long periods yet still managed to return home with nothing.
The Shaymen created numerous good opportunities but lacked the killer touch in front of goal and fell behind just before the half hour when Guissepe Sole struck.
And even when the home side were reduced to 10 men for the final 20 minutes, after Paul Lorraine was shown a red card, they could find no way through the home defence.
Nathan Joynes linked up with Jon Shaw in attack and struck up a decent understanding almost immediately.
Both had chances, as did Lewis Killeen and Rob Scott, and on another day one of them would have gone in.
But none did and the frustration on the faces of a Town side that had given its all was plain to see when the final whistle blew.
It was all Halifax in the opening quarter with Jay Gasson doing well to divert a Matt Doughty cross aimed at Shaw away from the striker's head and a Joynes shot was comfortably saved by Nick Gindre in the Woking goal.
Having produced some neat build up play, it was a route one chance that almost broke the deadlock in the 26th minute.
Adam Legzdins sent the ball long down field and Joynes flicked it on for Shaw whose well-struck shot flashed across the face of goal and wide.
Within a minute, the Shaymen were behind and it was a controversial strike that put Woking into the lead.
Scott appeared to have been fouled and was adamant that the ball had crossed the dead ball line before Adam Green pulled it back for Sole. The rest of the Town defence also stopped for a moment which gave the Cards frontman the chance to slam home.
Marvin Morgan headed a mis-hit Sole shot over the bar soon after as Town's defence battled to regain concentration.
And early in the second half, after a couple of Halifax corners, Woking broke down the middle when Tom Kearney lost possession but, fortunately for the Shaymen, Sole's shot came back off a post and was cleared.
From that moment on, it was all Halifax with the home side showing little ambition going forward.
Simon Heslop and Joynes combined to create an opening for Killeen but his shot was saved.
And when Kearney's left wing corner landed in the six yard box, Joynes stuck out a leg but could not get sufficient contact to trouble the keeper.
Scott's long throw on the right bounced right across goal to Shaw at the far post, but his left foot shot was easily blocked.
And when Killeen sent Shaw racing away down the right, the frontman looked odds on to score but, after rounding the keeper, he was pushed wide and that gave Tom Hutchinson the chance to get back and clear off the line.
Scott rose well in the box but headed a Heslop corner onto the roof of the net as Town continued to press for an equaliser.
And their chances appeared to have been boosted in the 70th minute when Lorraine was sent off for a second bookable offence.
He scythed down Killeen from behind for his second caution, having been booked earlier for delaying a throw-in as Woking tried to slow the game.
Kearney's free kick from the foul was bundled behind for a corner and a minute later Doughty's accurate ball in to the edge of the area found Killeen, who controlled and turned in one movement before unleashing a shot that Gindre dived to his right and put behind for another corner.
Woking almost caught Town on the break with a couple of minutes remaining when Bradley Quamina raced forward and picked out Liam Marum, but Jake Wright got back to spectacularly clear the ball off the line.
And there was one last moment of hope for the Shaymen in stoppage time when a clearance bounced through to substitute Andy Campbell who spotted Gindre advancing.
Unfortunately, Campbell's right foot slipped as he was about to lift the ball over the keeper and the opportunity went begging.
Star Shayman
While Town's defence was rarely put under any sustained pressure at Kingfield, when it was Jake Wright was as solid as a rock.
He wears his heart on his sleeve and shows the passion supporters love in a player, even if it can lead to the occasional confrontation.
And his late goalline clearance was magnificent as he raced back and slid 10 yards to hook the ball away when Liam Marum appeared to have the simplest of tasks to give Woking a two-goal lead.
Nathan Joynes had only started one game this season before Saturday, but he settled straight into his stride on his return to Halifax.
The former Barnsley frontman showed some neat touches as he linked well with Jon Shaw in attack and when he gets his full sharpness back he will be a real handful for Blue Square Premier defences.
Matt Doughty had another good game at left back, mainly in an attacking sense.
His ball in for Lewis Killeen with little more than 20 minutes remaining was perfect and Town were only denied a deserved equaliser by a fine save from home keeper Nick Gindre.
Wright takes the three points on offer in our season-long competition. Joynes gets two and Doughty one.
