In 1937 a young, newly qualified vet arrived in the Yorkshire Dales from big-city Glasgow and was immediately enchanted by the beautifully rugged landscape and the unflagging spirit of the people who farmed its slopes.
Thirty years later he charmed the world with his stories of Dales' life written under the pen name of James Herriot.
His wonderfully funny, yet often touching books spawned a hugely successful TV series watched by millions.
Who could forget that chaotic partnership with Siegfried, his wedding at last to Helen, the hilarious encounters with the livestock or those heart-rending moments when a much loved pet had reached the end.
Badapple Theatre's new comic drama recalls many of these moments as it celebrates the early years of All Creatures Great and Small at Square Chapel tonight at 8pm in An Honorary Yorkshireman - The James Herriot Story.
In it they rekindle the stories that brought so much pleasure to the nation.
Young and old alike will warm to the stories of the young newcomer as he is finally accepted into the Dales' community.
Tickets are £10 and £8 for concessions. To book or for more information call Square Chapel Box Office on 01422 349422 or visit www.squarechapel.co.uk.
