BUMPER bank holiday celebrations are taking place across Calderdale this weekend.
The entertainment ranges from traditional – the Green Man festival to encourage fertility – to the modern, a sampling workshop making electronic music.

At Shibden Hall, Halifax, the May Day celebrations include building a Green Man, an ancient fertility rite.

Valerie Stansfield, museum manager, said: "The Green Man is the spirit of the forest, and the event is about guarding against evil spirits, regeneration and rebirth."

On Monday visitors to the hall will be able to help build a Green Man out of leaves and willow, make masks and listen to traditional folk tales.

At the Trades Club, Hebden Bridge, a free workshop on making electronic music takes place from 11am to 5pm. The Art of Sampling use whatever is to hand to make music – from stamping feet to dripping taps.

At the Piece Hall, Halifax, the Back to the Blitz event takes a trip down memory lane to the sounds of Vera Lynn and Gracie Fields, as performed by Kim LeMar.

There will be military vehicles on display, period artefacts and a recreation of an actual bomb site.

A three-mile walk focusing on the history of Midgley will take place on Saturday. Meet Jacqui at Midgley School car park at 10am.

On Sunday there will be two heritage walks. One takes a look at Luddenden. Meet Liz Watkins at the War Memorial, opposite the Lord Nelson at 2.15pm.
