CALDERDALE lads are preparing to throw shapes with the county's best in a hip-hop dance contest in Halifax.
The second Yorkshire Youth Hip-Hop Dance Festival will take place on Friday, May 9 and Saturday, May 10 at The Workshop, St James's Street, Halifax.

The event starts at 8pm both evenings and will provide 90 minutes' worth of eye-catching and imaginative dance.

The Workshop's assistant dance officer Jimmy Turner said: "Since the first Yorkshire Youth Hip-Hop Dance Festival last May The Workshop has been continuing its efforts to get boys involved in dance. The Workshop is now renowned for having a first class lads' dance crew and a passionate and enthused coaching staff.

"Evidence of this includes requests for The Workshop's Lads' Dance Crew to perform at events across Yorkshire and staff being asked to collaborate with the likes of Northern Ballet Theatre.

"This year's Yorkshire Youth Hip Hop Dance Festival will build on last year's event, with more groups from across Yorkshire coming to perform."

The aims of the festival are to promote dance, specifically hip-hop, in Yorkshire and to provide an arena to allow young people to be encouraged and inspired by meeting others with shared interests.

Mr Turner said: "There will be a number of groups performing and we have not yet had all of them confirm, but we know for definite that there will be Hype Dance from Sheffield, The Workshop Lads (Halifax), Breakers Unify (Leeds), as well as groups from Selby."

Everyone is welcome - tickets, £3 each, need to be booked in advance. For more information about the event and to arrange tickets, contact the Workshop, tel: 01422 323688.

"wikipedia" is quite a suitable name as it too is a fountain of inaccurate knowledge online...Being the one responsible for the workshop lads i would like to thank you for your negative feedback.

Bboying as a style of dance is not new fangled, rather began in the 1960's and is actually performed to funk music (James Brown et al), not "new fangled boom boom boom racket" as you believe. Perhaps do some research before belittling these lads, who work very hard and make a well recognized contribution to the dance scene in Yorkshire.

thank you.

Dance Officer
The Workshop.

Dear Wiki, it bothers me that your blanket opinion of what your experience of this kind of art amounts to is in so unfair. As with most communities there are always the few who spoil it for the many and I suspect your opinions are founded on the few people who abuse this "boom boom boom" scenario, and lead you to adopt the opinion you hold. I wish that short-sighted people like yourself would see past your prejudices and give support to young people who are actually very polite and well-meaning instead of belittling their every action. There is a mountain of good work being done out there that is thwatrted by people who instist on bringing their small minded and destructive opinions in to the light.

Please fox trot off.
