GEORGE Formby devotees young and old will enjoy the sounds of the four-stringed instrument he made famous at tomorrow's first Calderdale Schools Ukulele Concert.
The event, at New Road Primary School, Sowerby New Road, Sowerby Bridge, has been organised by school caretaker and after-school ukulele tutor Wayne Pickersgill.

The admission price of £1.50 includes entry to a raffle to win a ukulele given by the event's sponsors, Eagle Music Shop of Huddersfield. Children are admitted free and the event runs from 12pm to 3pm.

Artists include ukulele groups from New Road Primary School and St Mary's Mill Bank, with guests Dennis Mitchell, chairman of the George Formby Society and "Formby Girl", 10-year-old Francesca Davies from Manchester.

Mr Pickersgill, a member of the George Formby Society and the Yorkshire Ukulele Society, said: "I have organised the event to give parents, family, friends and enthusiasts the opportunity to see how much fun this little instrument can create and how much enjoyment it gives the children and other players.

"This is the first time this type of concert has been held in Calderdale and, if successful, I am sure it could become an annual event."
